Talking about the weather is a common topic of conversation in Mandarin Chinese, as it is in every language. It is a good idea to be able to understand and make a brief statement on the weather when you meet somebody in China. It will also be useful when you are making travel plans in China to be able to understand some of the weather forecast on Chinese television or radio.
In Northern cities, such as Beijing, where the weather can be dry for long periods, smog can build up in the air. This isn't helped by winds blowing in sand from the desert to the West. Chinese scientists have devised 'cloud seeding' techniques to induce rain when desired. Pellets containing silver iodide are fired by airplanes into clouds to cause the moisture to drop as rain. This technique gained a lot of attention in the build up the the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, as the organisers wanted to ensure perfect weather for the opening ceremony!
