Dani & Leo decide to visit the main tourist attractions in Beijing, and start by going to the Forbidden City, which is situated in the middle of Beijing. Dani explains to Leo the Mandarin Chinese name for the place. The Chinese name is literally 'the Former Palace' as it was the seat of the most recent Chinese dynasties who ruled all of China from here. The well known Tian'anmen square is named as it lies opposite the Tian'anmen gate to the Forbidden City, and it is the largest urban square in the world.
Tian'anmen square and the Forbidden City are the most visited sights in China, and are just as popular with local Chinese tourists as with international tourists. Expect to see large crowds at peak times and on national holidays. It is common to see many swarms of tour groups and tour buses gather in the square before proceeding into the former palace. There is a subway station on the edge of the square making it easily accessible.
