Here the basic words and phrases in Mandarin Chinese are introduced, to provide all you'll need to say hello or to start a conversation. This is your essential starting point as you learn Mandarin Chinese. Many people start to learn Chinese before a holiday or business trip to China, but you can also learn on the ground when you arrive there.
Dani meets you on arrival at Beijing International Airport. Dani, a fluent English speaker, will guide you during your time in China! You are in China on a business trip but you will have plenty of free time to see the sights, meet interesting people, experience the local culture, and of course learn Chinese!
Interestingly the airport code for Beijing International Airport is PEK, this is based on the former spelling of the Chinese capital in English - Peking. These sounds are similar in Mandarin, hence the different spelling. The word Peking is still used in some places throughout the city, including for the signature dish, Peking Duck!
