Exercise 1
of 4
To type a special pinyin letter, simply type the vowel followed by the number of the tone.
For example, typing 'a1' will convert to 'ā' when typed.
Like most East Asian languages, Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language. As you begin to learn Chinese, you will find that words can have different meanings depending on the tone used when speaking it. There are four tones to practice as you learn Mandarin, and these are displayed using the four tone marks over the vowels in Pinyin.
Our exercises will constantly test and reinforce your mastery of the tones when you're learning Chinese. Where possible we will present options where listening to and identifying the correct tone is essential to selecting the correct answer. So by collecting gold achievements as you work through the exercises, you'll naturally begin to distinguish the four tones.
