Exercise 1
of 10
Dani takes Leo to the Silk Market in Beijing to shop for Chinese gifts to bring home to his family members. As there is a subway station in the vicinity of the market, Dani and Leo can go there by subway. Leo already knows how to ask what price something is in Mandarin Chinese. But this time, Leo feels the need to be able to haggle more effectively in Chinese. Simply saying that something is too expensive in Mandarin isn't going to be good enough when dealing with the market sellers here!
The Silk Market is spread over many different levels with stalls and units packed closely together. As you walk through the market, expect to be have sellers try to get you to look at their merchandise. The different types of products for sale are generally grouped together. For example, all the footwear might be in the basement level, while all the suits may be on the fourth level. The market also has many food stalls and eating places so you can take your time exploring all the bargains to be had.
