It's not unusual to need to ask for directions when visiting any foreign country. If you can't find someone who speaks English, it can help to know some relevant Chinese words and phrases. People in Chinese will usually be keen to help you find your way, but you may need to meet them halfway!
Try to arm yourself with a good map and directions before you step outside your hotel door in China. Receptionist staff are a great source of good information and directions. They may often make a phone call to confirm details they are unsure of. Ask them to write the name and address of where you want to go in Chinese characters. By using this to ask to strangers, it may be easier to find your way to where you want to go.
